Training Description:
Incel stands for ‘involuntarily celibate’ and relates to an individual (often male) who has been unable to have an intimate relationship. Incel ideology started as an online supportive movement, but many sections of this online subculture have become violent, and harmful to women and society. The incel movement has been linked to mass murders in both the US and the UK.
Extreme misogyny has infiltrated even mainstream social media and entertainment media platforms, and therefore presents a rapidly growing risk. Incel terminology is often used by young people, and mainstream extreme misogyny has the potential to further radicalise young people into dangerous parts of incel culture. This training will help you navigate the terminology, understand the risks, identify when a young person might be involved in this online space, understand when to seek support, and explore how incel ideology links more widely to extreme misogyny.
Learning Objectives
To understand key definitions relating to the incel movement
To consider how young people are radicalised online into the incel movement
To discover the link between incels and terrorism
To know what support is available to safeguard in this space.
